Key Stage Two
.
Pupils within KS2 will build, reconsolidate and recap on the solid foundations of their learning in EYFS and KS1. Children will be introduced to formal written methods in year three and these will be developed and built on each year in line with the National Curriculum. Manipulatives, such as Numicon, place value counters and base ten, will be used within lessons before children move on the, 'Do it, Stretch it, Solve it' questions. The children will be exposed to frequent opportunities to use their reasoning and problem solving skills to develop their conceptual understanding and prepare them for the wider world and the next stage in their learning journey.
Daily Arithmetic
In KS2, separate from their maths lesson, pupils will take part in an arithmetic session. During this time, children will work on their fluency of different mathematical skills, whilst also looking at the most efficient methods. Teachers will spend time carefully explaining and modelling each question to the children. These fundamental skills help to underpin the children's mathematical knowledge and support them in every part of their maths learning.
Times Table Rockstars
Times Table Rockstars is available to children in year 3 to 6, allowing them to practise recall and fluency in their times tables. As a result, children progress through their times tables and quicken their recall speed. Children have the opportunity to access Times Table Rockstars from home to continue to develop their fluency.
'I really like Times Table Rockstars. It's made me learn my times tables much quicker and it's fun!' - Grace aged 10
Key Stage Two Problem-Solving
Once a term, the children from year 3 to 6 will take part in a problem-solving maths lesson. All the children will complete the same problem solving challenge, but it will be adapted to suit the expectations for each year group. This is a fantastic opportunity for children to develop their problem solving skills and see how their learning progresses throughout KS2. Work from each year group is displayed in the KS2 corridor for the term, so the children can see how each year group solved the problem.
