Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One
EYFS
Pupils in the Early Years are prepared for the National Curriculum by developing a solid conceptual understanding of number, shape, space and measure. The Early Years Foundation Framework, as well as Mastering Number and White Rose Maths, are used to guide mathematical learning in Reception. A high focus is placed on using manipulatives, such as Numicon and tens frames.
Key Stage One
Pupils in key stage one will follow the mastery approach through the White Rose scheme. Teaching within KS1 ensures that children are confident to manipulate and use numbers up to 100. A high focus is placed on using manipulatives, such as tens frames, Numicon and Rekenreks, before children move onto the 'Do it, Stretch it, Solve it' questions. Children in KS1 will continue to develop their number fluency through the Mastering Number Program.
NumBots
NumBots is available to EYFS and KS1 children, allowing them to practise recall and fluency in mental addition and subtraction. As a result, children progress from counting to calculating. Children have the opportunity to access NumBots at home to continue to develop their fluency.
Mastering Number
Mastering Number seeks to provide solid foundations for all children from Reception to Year 1 and Year 2 in the development of good number sense and fluency. Over time, the goal is for children to leave KS1 with calculation fluency, as well as confidence and flexibility with numbers. Key knowledge and comprehension will be key in Reception classes, as well as advancement through KS1, to ensure future success.
