Highnam PSHE Curriculum Statement

Intent

PSHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide the children at Highnam with opportunities to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community, preparing them for opportunities and responsibilities in the future.

Implementation:

At Highnam, we deliver the PSHE curriculum by utilising first-hand experience and sharing good practice; it is every staff member’s responsibility to do this by being a role model and having high expectations of Highnam pupils. All staff should actively promote the importance of shining in all we do and in inspiring those around us to sine, and celebrate this with the children.  

The PSHE curriculum is based on the PSHE Association programmes of study. This is the national body for personal, social, health and economic education and incorporates RSE and citizenship. Lessons are planned and delivered through the Jigsaw scheme. Jigsaw supports the development of skills, attitudes, values and behaviour, which enable pupils to:

• Have a sense of purpose
• Value self and others
• Form relationships
• Make and act on informed decisions
• Communicate effectively and work with others
• Respond to challenge
• Be active citizens within the local community
• Explore issues related to living in a democratic society
• Become healthy and fulfilled individuals

A key part of the Jigsaw approach is the weekly practice of mindfulness exercises with the children. These sessions enable children to relax the body as well as calm/quieten the mind. This improves their capacity to learn and develops inner resilience.

At Highnam, we believe that PSHE plays a vital part of primary education and needs to be taught weekly. There will also be opportunity to make cross-curricular links and these opportunities should not be missed. This enables staff to ensure full coverage of the PSHE scheme of work. There are always occasions where staff may feel it necessary to teach PSHE as a result of an issue which has arisen in their own class. 

PSHE is an important part of collective worship where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.

We want our children to become positive, confident citizens in a forever-changing society, showing awareness and respect for others and themselves.

British Values

Jigsaw contributes, as a good PSHE programme should, to the British Values agenda very significantly, both through the direct teaching of information and through the experiential learning children will enjoy.

The 5 strands of the British Values agenda have been mapped across every Puzzle and every Piece (lesson).

We link whole school assemblies to the Jigsaw Themes and Values being taught and applied through the PSHE curriculum. We are proud of the way we promote emotional wellbeing for all our pupils through our Jigsaw programme which underpins the whole of our curriculum.
