Poppy Planting in the Village

Today a selection of Highnam Pupils joined with the British Legion to plant some poppies in the village to commemorate the centenary of the Great War. One hundred years ago, in 1914, World War 1 began, and to remember the sacrifice of so many brave men and women we joined together for a small service to remember those that gave so much.

Earlier in the day we welcomed Mr. Steve Doyle into Collective Worship as we found out about two local brothers from Gloucester that fought in the war and sent postcards home to their mother. It was amazing to see the postcards which were discovered in a house clearance in the city.

At the planting ceremony we listened to Mr Berry playing the Last Post on his bugle, next Mr Doyle shared a few lines from a WW1 poem and we held a one minute silence.

So every August, when you pass the grass area near to the Highnam shop, you will see poppies planted by Highnam pupils in 2014.
