Native American Week - Day 5

The final day of Arts Week saw a tribal gathering of the school on the field. Early in the morning the tipi village and campfire were created and straight after registration each pupil put on their tunic, head dress and jewellery and headed out onto the Great Plains.

Reception began this special celebration by using their rain makers to accompany them in a rain dance around the camp fire. Next Year 6 performed the dance they had created with Mrs House. Following this, Year 6 pupils played a game of Lacrosse against some of the staff. After a close game Mrs Wilson scored in the last minute and the final score was 4-2 in favour of the staff.

While the match was going on Mr Tibbles was preparing our mid morning snack on the campfire. Each pupil was able to taste some corn bread and bison meat - it was delicious.

The morning ended with a wonderful assembly during which Key Stage Two pupils performed the song 'Land of the Silver Birch'. (This is available as a podcast on the website.) We were treated to a Native American novel written by Megan in Reception. Finally, we marvelled at the totem poles and art work created during the week.

"This week has been fun and interesting, we have learnt a lot about the Native Americans. The best part of the week for us was making our dream catchers with Mrs Chaloner."

Commented Chloe and Lily from Unit Two.

Thank you to all staff members for a fantastic week - one the pupils of Highnam Primary School will remember for a very long time.
