Mock Trial - Defendant Found GUILTY!

Today pupils from Highnam Academy took part in a Mock Trial competition at the Forest of Dean District Offices in Coleford. Following a few weeks of preparation the team were ready to defend Darcy Grainger (Molly). Following a strong opening from the 1st Prosecuting Solicitor, it was the turn of the 1st Defence Solicitor to cross examine the witness Robin. Yinka confidently asked thought-provoking questions and left the Magistrates with a number of things to consider. Next it was the 2nd Defence Solicitor (William) he had to cross examine the 2nd witness and the policeman who arrested Darcy the defendant.

Soon it was the turn of Darcy to take to the stand, along with her best friend and witness Kim Webb (Poppy). They were asked some awkward questions and responded with composure and confidence.

During the proceeding the court artist (Helen) and the local news reporter (Haydn) were busy capturing the events as they unfolded. The Usher (Dominic) welcomed the five Magistrates (including Cameron and Annalise) back into the room and we waited expectantly for the final decision.

There was silence in the courtroom as the magistrate delivered the decision... GUILTY. Harry and Ellie (Darcy's parents) were shocked by the sentence and watched tearfully as Darcy was lead away by the Youth Offending Team (Hannah).

We had a great first experience of a Mock Trial and we would like to thank the organisers and the parents that supported us during the day.

Website update: Congratulations to the whole team for winning the overall competition
