Year 2 Maths Workshop at Redmarley Academy

On Monday 15th October four Year 2 children, Nathan, Matthew, Duncan and Evan headed off to Redmarley Primary Academy for the afternoon.   The purpose of the visit was to meet pupils from both Redmarley Academy and from Staunton and Corse Academy for a Maths Workshop.

The boys were welcomed to Redmarley by Mrs. Evans who is one of the teachers there.  She led the workshop and quickly organized the children into groups, enabling them to mix with peers from other academies and participate in the activities with a series of different partners.

The first task of the afternoon was to study this image to decide how many triangles they could find.  Initially everyone thought that there were twelve, but Mrs. Evans encouraged the children to look closer.  How many can you see?

Next, Mrs. Evans introduced a variety of mathematical puzzles, problems and challenges and the children were encouraged to move freely among the tasks with different partners attempting to solve the problems as they went.

The children quickly settled down and began to tackle the challenges enthusiastically.  They discussed the problems confidently with their peers and cooperated extremely well with their partners.  As the children moved around the room, many mathematical discussions could be heard taking place as the problems were attempted and gradually solved.

Toward the end of the afternoon, the children were treated to a snack before attempting the final challenge of the afternoon.  Working with a partner, the final challenge was a competitive one and involved rolling a die to collect dots and fill up a chart faster than the rest of the class.  It was a perfect way to end the session.

“My favourite tasks were the shape problems,” said Matthew.  “Yes, they were really good fun!” added Duncan.

Many thanks to Mrs Wilson for taking the children and creating this report.
