Languages at Highnam

There has been an exciting new development in learning languages at Highnam Academy. From September Mrs Timothy has been coming in to school to work alongside class teachers in Key Stage 2 to teach French and Spanish. Pupils in Years 3 & 4 have been learning French and pupils in Years 5 & 6 have started learning Spanish.

As well as learning about the culture and traditions of France and Spain, pupils have been learning greetings, how to introduce themselves, colours and numbers. They will soon learn days of the week, months of the year and how to say when their birthday is as well as learning the names of animals so that they can talk about their pets.

In order to develop their listening and speaking skills children participate in a range of activities learning songs, playing language games and completing role plays and class surveys. They are able to recognise written phrases and they have been writing about themselves in French and Spanish.

At Christmas time children in Years 3 & 4 performed a French nativity play to each other, learning the script and the songs off by heart. Pupils in Years 5 & 6 have starred in assemblies demonstrating their Spanish skills to the rest of the school.

The children have impressed Mrs Timothy with the speed with which they learn new vocabulary and their enthusiasm for learning languages!
