Land Yacht Challenge

On Wednesday 9th February the four Key Stage Two classes took part in our first land yacht competition. For the past month pupils had been working at home to produce a vehicle to carry an egg across the playground. Over fifty land yachts had been expertly made and it was fantastic to see the effort which had gone into their design and construction.

The first round saw all the land yachts tested. Everyone waited eagerly as the first land yachts were brought to the start line. Carefully the owners held on to their vehicles and waited for the whistle to start the race. First it was the turn of the siblings. A great cheer went up from the crowd when the first land yacht crept off the line. Races for every year group from Year 3 to Year 6 followed.

With playgroup and Key Stage One now watching, Mrs Ruxton announced the pupils who were through to the semi-finals. The top three land yachts would then go through to the final.

Excitement mounted as the finalists were called to the start line. They were: William B, Helen and Molly, Dan S, Sophie L, Isabella R, Finn, Ben D, Sacha and Alicia. In the final the land yachts were judged on design, distance travelled, speed, durability, parental help and star quality.

Everyone cheered frantically as the wind sent the land yachts speeding across the playground for the final time.

The overall winner was Sacha with 25 points, Molly, Helen and Alicia all finished joint second with 24 points. Congratulations to everyone who took part, it was a very exciting afternoon.
