Kings Science and DT Challenge

For the past five years Kings' School, in Gloucester has held a Science and Engineering Challenge for primary schools in Gloucestershire. This year there were about 10 teams that entered and the Highnam team was Rebecca, Bethany, Teagan and Ben.

The Challenge

Our task was to build a rocket which would fly through the air towards a target. The rocket had to carry a passenger - an egg!

Materials

On our tables we had our instruction sheet and a box of materials. In the box we found: paper, a rubber egg, a real egg, a nose cone and card. We also found sticky labels and a pen, but these were not for the rocket but to write our names on to help the judges.

Building it

Building the rocket was fairly straighforward. The hard part was getting the egg to fly with the rocket. To start with we placed the egg inside the rocket but it got stuck and we had to have a rethink. We were able to decorate our rocket and we had to decide how many fins to put on to help it fly.

The test

There were two tests allowed, the first test was very important as it showed us that our nose cone needed to be held in place as it flew off and the rocket didn't go very far.Following the test we decided to turn the cone at the end around and place the egg inside - this worked very well.

The results

The judges took into consideration teamwork, design and the nearness to the target. We were nervous as they read out the results in reverse order. Highnam came in second place behind a school from Chepstow. We were very proud of our rocket and how we worked together as a team..

Thank you to parents and teachers for organsing the event and taking us along.
